Tempe, August 12, 2023 – After several years of planning and collaboration, Tempe City Councilmember Doreen Garlid officially launched the new City of Tempe Girl Scout Patch program. The program was initiated by councilmember Garlid to encourage families to get involved in our city. As a former Girl Scout and scout leader, one of councilmember Garlid’s core values is empowering Tempe’s young people. To earn the patch, Girl Scouts must complete at least one activity in each of four categories: history, government, community, and sustainability. Thanks to collaboration from the city of Tempe, Girls Scouts Arizona Cactus Pine Council, Inc., and youth patch artist Lyla Dye, this unique, first-of-its-kind opportunity for learning and civic engagement is now available in Tempe. According to councilmember Garlid, delivering exciting new programs such as this that improve the quality of life for Tempe residents is one of the most rewarding parts of council service.
