The next scheduled primary election in Tempe is in March 2020. Registered voters will be asked to choose a Mayor and three council members. Ballots will be sent by mail on February 12, 2020. If necessary, a general election will be held in May of 2020; the ballots for that election would be mailed out on April 22, 2020.

The 2020 elections will be held as ballot by mail, in which every registered voter automatically receives a ballot in the mail at the start of the voting period. In a ballot by mail election, rather than assigned polling places on Election Day, there will be Vote Centers, at which individuals may request replacement ballots, vote in person, or drop off their voted ballots.
